FVPLS services are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations – our communities know and trust our staff and services. Nationally, 95% of clients are First Nations women and children, and FVPLS services are unique, experienced and specialist agencies that deliver culturally safe legal and non-legal services within which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is acknowledged and celebrated. FVPLS organisations began operating more than 25 years ago, in 1998, to provide the victims and survivors of violence with specialised, and culturally safe representation and support. This was necessary because Aboriginal Legal Services represented alleged offenders of violence, which meant that First Nations victims and survivors had no representation, because of professional legal conflict.

Holistic response to family violence

Our FVPLS services are not just file management legal services, like many other legal services. Rather they support clients and communities along the full continuum of their needs, by providing:

prevention and early intervention services delivered to communities (such as outreach and education programs)

legal advice, case management support and service advocacy, for example, after violence has occurred) and

recovery and healing programs (post-violence).

FVPLS services provide a “wrap around”, holistic, service delivery model because they understand it is necessary to address the interconnected factors that cause family violence as well as the needs of First Nations people affected by family violence.

FVPLS services support clients and their children with non-legal services such as:

case management

court support

child protection advice and intervention

service system referrals

advocacy

kinship liaison.

In addition to this, FVPLS services provide clients and their children specialist legal services and support in relation to:

Family violence

Protective restraining orders

Child protection

Victims of crime compensation

Witness assistance law.
